Deedee and Jake

Ran about 4 miles along the Mulholland trail this morning. Met Deedee and Jake. Deedee says she runs because of Jake, because Jake is a black Labrador Retriever and they get chubby because they eat anything and everything.

Deedee told of how she grew up in Culver City and would ride horseback with her friends to a ranch in the area of DeSoto Avenue, spend the night and ride home the next day.

She also spoke of a Wild Bill's ranch near Calabasas. This would be Wild Bill of the Wild Bill Show of course. And Bill's speciality was training cutting horses, as in the control of one's herd.

I told her she should write a blog.

Six Miles on the Trails

It was cold, but not too cold. The crisp air gave wonderful views. Could see the snow on the Sierras. Green is bursting from the ground everywhere after the rains.

Ran 4 Miles on the Beach, Swam

Santa Monica Bay sunrise was very beautiful this morning. Long, slow swells rolled in to the shore and beyond the breakers the water was smooth with little bubbles floating in the reflections of dawn's pinks and blues.

Ran about 5 miles on Zuma Beach

Ran the length of Zuma beach yesterday. And that means I had to run back too, so to the ends and back. It felt like 5 miles or more, but it was soft sand and I was running barefoot so it might have been only 4.

Took a refreshing swim at the end.

The beach was packed and I've never seen so many lifeguards on duty, plus they had a lifeguard boat out in the water. The sun was shining and the water was a delicious blue-green. So nice!

Rock climbers were doing the cliffs at the lower end. One man was even doing it barefoot! But they were all using ropes.

(Sorry, did not take any pictures!)

Slow, but it was good to get out and exercise. There was a thin haze resting over the Valley and Sierras looked blue.

Running through the Sagebrush

Summer thinks its time has come already but Spring persists in her burst of wildflowers.

I ran about 5 or 6 miles along dirt Mulholland and the trails this morning. It was very hot. The yellow mustard blooms have passed their peak and the sagebrush is now taking the crown of blossoming glory. So many butterflies...

Ran 5 miles on Dirt Mulholland

The wildflowers were breathtaking! Too bad I didn't have my camera.

Ran 3 miles in the starlight last week. It was late when I got home but I had to run. No moon. I ran up Mulholland. I took a side road in the darkness thinking it would take me back to the suburbs but it was a dead end. It was interesting running through the thick trees where even the starlight was blotted out. Could not see a thing. More than once I heard rustling in the bushes. More than once I looked over my shoulder. Fun!

How do you run on an uneven dirt road in the dark without a light? You have to sense the road and just know where to step.

Ran 5 miles on Dirt Mulholland

...and walked on the beach in the evening. It was cold and windy. There were three kite-surfers skimming the waves - thrilling to watch. The ocean... good for the soul.

Ran 5 miles on Mulholland

Working day and night for days and nights with only a break to eat, sleep and shower (maybe) can be hard. At the start of the run I felt sluggish, felt bad. After a few miles I started feeling better and started looking at the great views and the snow on the mountains and breathed the crisp air. So good!
