Trail Run to Dog Lake

| Trail Run to Dog Lake |
Ran a difficult, snow-bound trail up in the Wasatch mountains a few weeks ago. It was worth it!

Where the Dande Lions Roar!
Doing shorter, sharper runs this week in preparation for the race on Sunday. (My sister-in-law is flying me out to Florida to do the run part in her triathlon relay.)
I found this canal not far from where I am living in Salt Lake City. It is fairly flat and away from traffic so it is good for some speed workouts. I thought the beds of dandelions along the shore were delightful. There are also quail, wild geese and various other species of bird life - quite wonderful!

Ran 6 miles on the beach
If a stranger came up to you and asked for your camera, what would you do? Better yet, you are in a foreign country and a local wants your camera. Would you give it to him? Well, I keep doing that – asking people for their cameras – and I have yet to be refused. Today included a group of young Japanese girls on Santa Monica beach. You should have seen the poses they struck and they were delighted with the pictures I took of them with their camera. I guess I'm just a photographer and when I don't have my own camera handy I get someone else's!
It was a lovely run in the sun. Yes, there is snow on the mountains, but the beach was warm. Go figure!
Got a blister under my big toe from running barefoot on the sand. Actually, I must be getting in shape (and thus running faster) if I generated enough friction for a blister! :) Only the left foot, don't know why. It was worth it.
Love the beach. Love the ocean. Love running.

Ran a mile in 6:25
This is discouraging. Last week I ran the 2 miles to the track and then timed a mile at 6:23, which was slower than a previous attempt. I put it down to being tired.
So this week I drove to the track, warmed up at the track and then ran 6:25 - slower than last week! And I still felt tired. Of course it was pouring with rain.
Sigh!

Ran 5 miles on Zuma Beach
It was chilly but warm enough to run barefoot. The water was as cold as winter. But the surfers and the dolphins seemed to at home in the rolling blue ocean. It was low tide and I was able to run all the way north to the rock promontory. There is a tunnel through the rocks to little private beaches. I touched the sea anemones and felt their stingers tug at my finger.
On the way back I took some pictures of a couple with their baby and dog - using their camera. Fabulous pictures in the morning sun gold and blue.
At the southern end rock climbers were already up the cliff. I helped a kid tie a rope - it seems nobody had ever taught him how to tie a knot.
I felt good running back to the car. The swim was breathtaking but my body was so warm from the running that the cold was confrontable, even refreshing. Caught a couple of waves. Only in Southern California!

Ran a mile in 6:23
Also ran about 2 miles to the track, including the 3/4 mile uphill on Mulholland. Beautiful tartan track at Calabasas High. Not a great time for the mile. I was tired!

Ran about 5 miles
Ran the other way down Mulholland, paved, towards Valley Circle. It was cold but sunny. Felt good. I am gaining stamina.

Ran to Lookout Point before dawn
A very bright moon lighted the way. The whole valley was a Christmas tree of lights twinkling in the dark.

Ran 4 miles, to Lookout Point
Well, we call it Lookout Point because you can see the whole Valley from there. It was warm like summer! Like So Cal! Felt strong -- consistent training is paying off.

Deedee and Jake
Ran about 4 miles along the Mulholland trail this morning. Met Deedee and Jake. Deedee says she runs because of Jake, because Jake is a black Labrador Retriever and they get chubby because they eat anything and everything.
Deedee told of how she grew up in Culver City and would ride horseback with her friends to a ranch in the area of DeSoto Avenue, spend the night and ride home the next day.
She also spoke of a Wild Bill's ranch near Calabasas. This would be Wild Bill of the Wild Bill Show of course. And Bill's speciality was training cutting horses, as in the control of one's herd.
I told her she should write a blog.

Ran 4 Miles on the Beach, Swam
Santa Monica Bay sunrise was very beautiful this morning. Long, slow swells rolled in to the shore and beyond the breakers the water was smooth with little bubbles floating in the reflections of dawn's pinks and blues.

Ran about 5 miles on Zuma Beach
Ran the length of Zuma beach yesterday. And that means I had to run back too, so to the ends and back. It felt like 5 miles or more, but it was soft sand and I was running barefoot so it might have been only 4.
Took a refreshing swim at the end.
The beach was packed and I've never seen so many lifeguards on duty, plus they had a lifeguard boat out in the water. The sun was shining and the water was a delicious blue-green. So nice!
Rock climbers were doing the cliffs at the lower end. One man was even doing it barefoot! But they were all using ropes.
(Sorry, did not take any pictures!)

Running through the Sagebrush
I ran about 5 or 6 miles along dirt Mulholland and the trails this morning. It was very hot. The yellow mustard blooms have passed their peak and the sagebrush is now taking the crown of blossoming glory. So many butterflies...

Ran 5 miles on Dirt Mulholland
The wildflowers were breathtaking! Too bad I didn't have my camera.
Ran 3 miles in the starlight last week. It was late when I got home but I had to run. No moon. I ran up Mulholland. I took a side road in the darkness thinking it would take me back to the suburbs but it was a dead end. It was interesting running through the thick trees where even the starlight was blotted out. Could not see a thing. More than once I heard rustling in the bushes. More than once I looked over my shoulder. Fun!
How do you run on an uneven dirt road in the dark without a light? You have to sense the road and just know where to step.

Ran 5 miles on Mulholland
Working day and night for days and nights with only a break to eat, sleep and shower (maybe) can be hard. At the start of the run I felt sluggish, felt bad. After a few miles I started feeling better and started looking at the great views and the snow on the mountains and breathed the crisp air. So good!

Walked with Arian on my back-
Walked today on the road around Triunfo Park with Arian on my back. I guess around 3 miles with 300 feet elevation.
Also ran around a mile on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Walked alone 2 miles on Monday while at work.
I miss many of the friends at work, particulary in kitchen. 3 out of the last 4 days, I was alone during lunch.
Take care,
Jayesh

Hiking in the Sierras last weekend
Mike, two of his friends and I hiked into the Mineral King Wilderness over the weekend. We probably walked about 12 miles but with about 7,500 feet elevation gain (per GPS), plus carrying packs for two nights camping, so it was tough! Truly spectacular vistas – highly recommended to all.

Ran for a mile or so (15 minutes) today. Walked 1.5 miles yesterday
My son is on the basketball team for his school and his practices forced him to wait some time afterschool until his practice starts. So we changed his schedule and now he starts school at 845AM instead of 750AM. What does it have to do for this blog?
Well, I get one extra hour in the morning! Today was the first day so I went out and ran a mile. I walk frequently but ran today after few months!
Yesterday I walked 1.5 miles at work.
I know you are wondering why I am so punctual in posting my walks/runs on this blog? Well, after joining this blog, I started a blog of mine on blogger.com/blogspot.com. So currently I am visiting blogspot.com regularly....and so there are regular posts from me.
